Q Distribution for Long-Period P Waves in the Mantle By

چکیده

The Q-depth relation in the earth's mantle has been estimated for long-period P waves from two deep-focus and three intermediate earthquakes. The amplitude spectrums of the first P waves from 114 seismograms at recording stations inthe distance range between 15 and 103 degrees, have been corrected for the crustal structure and the instrument and used to measure the effects of attenuation ver the whole mantle. Probable Q models are presented on the basis of the spectral mplitude ratios between these stations. The low Q between 120 and 280 in the upper mantle shows a rapid increase at depths around 900km to several thousands or greater in the lower mantle, and there is an apparent drop of Q near the base of the mantle. The frequency dependence of the spectral ratios against epicentral distance over about 80 degrees differs for the deep-focus and intermediate earthquakes, uggesting the possible diffraction effects due to the core.

Spectrum of P and PcP in Relation to the Mantle-Core Boundary and Attenuation in the Mantle

Spectrum analyses were made of the records of the short-period vertical component of P and PcP phases on seismograms of array stations at Tonto Forest, Arizona, for twenty-one earthquakes over the range A _-47 ø to 83 ø. Generally, as has been reported by other investigators, the trace amplitude ratio of PcP to P is significantly larger than the theoretical ratio. The pulse width of PcP is narr...

Surface-wave sensitivity to 3-D anelasticity

S U M M A R Y Lateral variations in mantle anelasticity (Q) are important for understanding the Earth’s thermal and chemical structure in the mantle. In the past decades, preliminary global 3-D tomographic Q models have been developed based upon the assumption that traveltime (phase delay) anomalies are due to the Earth’s elastic (velocity) structure whereas amplitude anomalies are dominated by...

A Note on the Attenuation of Short Period P and S Waves in the Mantle

The reciprocal dissipation factor Q of P and S waves is determined by spectral analysis of records of earthquakes whose epicentral distance from Tsukuba ranges from 36 to 76 degrees, with special emphasis on that of short period S waves. A constant velocity radiated spectrum near the source is assumed. The value of QƒÀ(Q for S waves) is found between 300 to 2400 in the period range from 0.1 to ...

Thickness of Crust in the West of Iran Obtained from Modeling of Ps Converted Waves

Receiver functions are usually used to detect Ps converted waves and are especially useful to picture seismic discontinuities in the crust and upper mantle. In this study, the P receiver function technique beneath the west Iran is used to map out the lateral variation of the Moho boundary. The teleseismic data (Mb ≥5.5, epicentral distance between 30˚-95˚) recorded from 2004 to 2016 at 17 perma...

تحلیل فضایی امواج گرمایی ایران

Climate risks are the inherent features of Earth's climate. The occurence of heat wave is one of these natural phenomena. Heat waves, one of the basic appearances of climate change, are very important because of frequency and damage of life and property, (Haddow et al, 2008). Frequency of heat wave occurence in recent years, is one of the aspects of climatic changes and extreme weather (Matthie...
